The envelope send by Chi (Taiwan) contained red envelopes. In the Chinese New Year, adults give them to children with money inside. I received them filled with some New Year's items:
-a little piece of money that will give me a good begin of the year;
-an amazing stamp: it is a year of dragon (sorry, I put it upside down!);
-and the two syllables of my name in Chinese, from an old printing house.

Now I can write my name in Chinese!

In fact, I've got this little red envelope from Bree, who lives in Malaysia. She explained me that during Chinese New Year married adults give unmarried friends and relatives a red-coloured envelope with some money on it. It is a tradition which is practised by all the Chinese in the world. It symbolises health and helps you to protect from bad things.

But I didn't send money to my friend, but a little love letter brooch:

MAIL PROJECTS #7 - Brain Cell

Brian Cell is a mail art project begun by Ryosuke Cohen in June 1985. The project is basically a networked art project where individual artists create their own 30x42 cm work of art with artist stamps, drawings, stickers and so on. This is sent to Cohen, who prints each cell - 150 copies each - with a Cyclostyle (now out of production). One copy is sent to the author, as well as other participants. New editions are published every 8 to 10 days. As of January 2011, there have been 811 issues (I think). You can see most of them in the blog Brain Cell Compilation.

Cohen described the origin of the project's name in 1985:

"Well, I’ll title my work “Brain Cell”, because the structure of a brain through a microscope looks like the diagram of the Mail Art network. Thousands of Neurons clung and piled up together are just like the Mail Art network, I believe."

I've got two issues so far: nº 796 and 807

Please send me your stamp design, rubber stamp, or 150 stickers or seals. I will print or paste these materials onto the A3 size paper, creating 150 sheets. I will then send a sheet back with a list of addresses to each participant. I will publish at intervals of 8 to 10 days at that time will include 60 people or so. Brain Cell is always seeking a change, does not intend to settle and care of it’s extension of the Network. So... don’t mail a lump of stuff for several issues. Please send them to me one issue at a time, Thank you!

If you like any of these, chances are you'll love this magazine: pens and pencils, bottled ink and paper, notebooks and notecards diaries and journals, postcards and postmarks, ephemera and mail art, letters and stamps, day planners and organizers, typewriters and doodles. The website was launched as a prelude to the print edition of the magazine which is scheduled for a 2012-2013 publication.

Jackie has sent me these two postcards so far. The last one suffered a terrible accident in way, as you can see.

Last month, I wanted to send to my friend Laura (the UK) her birthday present. So I gathered some items and put them together in a shoe box. Exactly like this one:

When I arrived in the post office counter, I was told that it's forbidden to put advertisements on the packets. I think my face was a sign of big surprise: I only wished to recycle! Then the woman said: "Don't worry". She started to cover the advertisement with sticky tape. Metres and metres of brown ugly sticky tape, I mean! I hadn't any picture of the result, but I assure you that you couldn't see the advertisement. In fact, you could see the box with great difficulty. So... sorry, Laura!

Weird Existing Animals is the second mail art project that Heleen set up:

Call for Mail Art: Weird (existing) Animals! Platypus, Tapir, Okapi, Echidna, Mole, Axolotl are some of my favourite animals. They have in common that they exist and that they are uncommon. Which animal do you think odd? Send your image of an unusual (existing, no fantasy) animal. All media are welcomed, minimum postcard size (10x15 cm), maximum A4 (20x30 cm).
