#AtoZChallenge | U is for Ugly & University

This is one of Heleen's works of art, turned into a postcard. Of course I don't think this is ugly! But, when I looked up for blobfish in the Wikipedia, I read this:
In September 2013 the blobfish was voted the "World's Ugliest Animal", based on photographs of decompressed specimens, and adopted as the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, in an initiative "dedicated to raising the profile of some of Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children".
Well, it doesn't seem so ugly here. And it is nice when it meets a... err... tapir diver?

The back of the postcard is worth looking at, even with a personalised (real!) stamp with the same drawing:

And for the serious part of the post (if someone needs any), a postcard sent by John, showing the University of York (the UK). Derwent College from Heslington Hall gardens.

Most people remember that they wrote a lot of letters/postcards when they were at University (and most of them stopped after that... Why?). Did/Do you send this kind of postcards?

  1. I think Heleen's work of art as a postcard and as a stamp make the blobfish look super cute.
Didn't know there is such a thing as Ugly Animal Preservation Society!

    1. I didn't know either. The meetings trying to find the ugliest animal in the world must be... awful?

  2. Ugly? - Never. A blogfish probably wou;d consider us ugly too.Great artwork. I never sent a postcard from University - but that was nearly 60 years ago.

    1. Maybe the fishes have such a society too, and vote for the ugliest humans... :D

  4. The PC is ubercute. And the matching stamp is amazing - didn't know the blobfish is the ugliest animal, doesn't look very ugly to me :)

I sent regular aerogramme letters when I was in Uni, but that was a long, long time ago.

    1. This university is very different of those that appear on your U-post, isn't it?

  5. That university postcard is kinda ugly, too! Love Heleen's personalized stamp!

    1. I don't think so. Modern universities are a genre in itself... Anyway, I was happy to receive and add it to my collection.

  6. Ugly seems a harsh word, but I'm fairly certain I coughed up a blobfish look-alike when I had pneumonia. The postcard and the stamp make it look cute, though.

I didn't know about the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. I am guilty of being concerned about "cute" endangered animals, like the Red Panda. Maybe the reason I didn't know about the plight of the blobfish is because it's in the deep and I feel shallow.

    1. I guess its mission is to attract our attention. Probably pandas and humans are more alike, so we think it is prettier than a blobfish. How self-centred we are!

  7. I love this postcard and stamp! There is a new children's book out featuring a blob fish. I'll try to find the title for you.

  8. Thank you for posting, Eva, and all of you thank you for your kind comments!

Most credits of course go to Mart1, the kid from Belgium who sent me blob fish and tapir mail art and thus inspired me to draw and send these two in return.

And 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder':-)
Personally I don't think the blobfish ugly, I do think it amazing for living so deeply under water.
And indeed decompression might be the cause of his/her blobby shape above water. As far as I know no one ever has made (or at least shown) photos of the animal in his/her own habitat. I imagine the blobfish moving elegant, with grace through the deep sea waters :-)

    1. I had never heard about the blobfish before this postcard, so I had never thought of its beauty/ugliness. Your drawing makes it very nice, that's sure! :)

  9. The picture and matching stamp are far from ugly. The real fish may indeed be ugly to our perspective or maybe not. After all isn't there something about beauty in the eye of the beholder. Glad I didn't have to help pick ugliest anything.

    1. So right. I am unable to decide if any fish is ugly or it isn't :)

  12. The Blobfish was my icon at one time. Now I use my own photo. I'm not sure which is the more worthy of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society's attention!

    1. You can do that in some countries (in the Netherlands, France, Spain... at least). But actually is a bit expensive.

  14. The Ugly Animal Preservation Society! LOL! Did't know it even existed. But I think it's a nice thing. We don't need to be all beautiful ;-)

My university was close to home, so I didn't send any postcards - I could just visit everyone instead hehe.
