Letter sent by Alan (the UK).
Concerning the stamps, the miniature sheet was issued on 4 August 2000 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's 100th Birthday. It features four 27p stamps that each portray a member of the Royal line: Queen Elizabeth, the Prince of Wales, Prince William and the Queen Mother.
I am happy that Royal Mail did not succeed in ruine the stamps 100%, even if they tried, with those awful blue felt-tip pen scratches!
Great mini sheet. Didn't Royal Mail do something similar with 4 generations from Queen Elizabeth down to Prince George?
ReplyDeleteI think the postal worker had a dilemma... the stamps should be canceled but the mini sheet seems special... and indeed, those stamps were not truly canceled at all.
I'm not sure about the sheets. The UK issues a big amount of stamps depicting royalty... But this set is among the loveliest, I think.
DeleteAnd you are right: after so much effort, the stamps aren't cancelled!
Luckily for you that the postal worker apparently didn't dare to add a felt pen scratch to the royal family's faces! Or maybe he didn't recognize the stamps?!
ReplyDelete(happens to my mail sometimes too, then I get a note that they think I didn't add sufficient postage, and when I see their scan of my mail it is clear I did!..)
I guess the postal worker had a bad day. I always think that when they show no mercy with beautiful and carefully chosen stamps...
DeleteRuining stamps with blue ink reminds me of the half dozen times I prayed the post office would send my letter because It was too heavy. I always add 2 stamps. Reminds me of that song Please Mr. Postman
ReplyDeleteCongrats finisher.

Many thanks! That song is great, isn't it? :)
DeleteEvery time I see a post like this it reminds me that is rarer and rarer to receive a letter with other than the standard first or second class stamps.
ReplyDeleteMy friends are thoughtful :D
DeleteI never know why they can't use a hand stamp.
ReplyDeleteThat's my question!
DeleteThose pen scratches are truly offensive.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very nice sheet with the lovely Queen Mum.
"Offensive" could be the word.
DeleteI see it went through the machine upside-down the first time (see the cancellation at the bottom left). That's why it got the manual attention but they didn't do the job very efficiently, thank goodness. There have been so many stamps issued over the years that it must be a problem for the sorting people to recognise which are real and which are not.
ReplyDeleteTo think, each of those four stamps would post a letter in 2000. Now not even half.
I'm glad they didn't succeed! Thanks again, Alan. I'll answer the letter any time during the next, let's say, three months ;)
