Women on Stamps | Flannery O'Connor

The stamp that honours Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) was issued on 5 June 2015. It is the 30th stamp in the USPS Literary Arts series.

I had never heard about Flannery O'Connor, and I liked the design of the stamp at first sight. Especially in combination with the blue hummingbird and this pictorial postmark. But not everybody agrees...

---------------

For the new edition of Sunday Stamps-II A to Z, I have decided to show some of the stamps I have got on letters and postcards, related to one topic: women. This is the post for the letter O.

More women on stamps.

  1. I like this design, too, but in a way I agree with the critics that this maybe is a too flattered. Personally I would have liked to see the peacock's face on this stamp, the way she has painted it.

    1. I guess I had no previous image of O'Connor, so it would do for me. But yes, I also agree that for her fans the stamps could be somehow shocking.

It's always easy to like the stamps from other countries, for their aesthetics, and be more critical with the stamps from our own country, because we know more, in general, about the subjects.

  2. It is a pretty stamp, but I think of her as being a less attractive woman.

  3. I'd not heard of her but assumed from the stamp she was an bird painting artist nothing says searing short stories although it is an attractive stamp. You'd have thought the designers would have at least done some research.

  4. I would not have thought about this one for today - I remember reading she was a controversial figure, so maybe not a surprise that there is some controversy about her stamp.

    1. Isn't there some controversy about every stamp? ;-)

  5. Seems like artists of every type live with controversy. Nice stamp, I like it.

    1. I also think it's nice. But I must keep saying that I know almost nothing about the artist. Only what I have read on Wikipedia! now I feel curious about her work.

  6. I have the Complete Stories book by Flannery... great writer, even though the style and the language may make reading it a bit more difficult for a non-native speaker, but still, I enjoyed her stories! Great to see her on stamp too!

    1. I think that the combination of both stamps on the same cover is wonderful, let alone the pictorial postmark.
