Sunday Stamps is today about Anniversaries.
2020 marks the 180th anniversary of the Penny Black. The stamp knows as Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public stamp system. It was issued in May 1840, and features a profile of Queen Victoria.
Reproductions of the Penny Black, Twopenny Blue and Penny Red were meant to be part of the big London 2020 stamps shows. The fair was cancelled, but the stamps were issued anyway.

I prefer the 2d blue as a stamp, one would also in 1840 have received a nice long letter with an ounce weight.

Almost everything is cancelled right now, so no surprise here. I'm glad they still issued the stamps!

DeleteHave you noticed, on the souvenir sheet there are only eight valid stamps. The one in the middle is just a label, and is back to front.

DeleteI wonder if it is to stop people from thinking that one is a stamp? Or to show how it would have been printed? An odd choice regardless. I think a better choice might have been her cypher that also appeared on Victorian pillar boxes.
