For today's theme in Sunday Stamps, Endangered species, two endangered plants: Dwarf Milkwort (Polygala amarella) and Marsh Saxifrage (Saxifraga birculus). These UK stamps were issued in 2009, and belong to this set.
"The Latin word saxifraga means literally 'stone-breaker', from Latin saxum ("rock" or 'stone') + frangere ('to break'). It is usually thought to indicate a medicinal use for treatment of urinary calculi (known as kidney or bladder stones), rather than breaking rocks apart."
Love saxifrage, such pretty things. This set has passed me by I can now see there is a gap in my collection waiting to be filled!
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful set. Sorry I created a need... :)
DeleteI don't know why, but I like the word saxifrage. And Joy is right, it is a pretty thing.

Very Pretty. I usually don't think of plants as endangered.
ReplyDeleteThe first thought when you read "endangered" goes to animals, and especially the big ones. But a lot of plants and little animals are also in danger.
