Little Red Riding Hood is a character I love. I had not seen this version by
Fiep Westendorp until
Heleen (the Netherlands) sent it to me in the shape of a postcard. The same illustration appears on the selvage of this wonderful (wonderful, wonderful!) sheet of stamps issued last year. Can you spot her?
And there is another version on the following postcard, also sent by Heleen:
But, besides
Little Red Riding Hood, the
Fairy Tale Wood, by
Molly Brett (1902-1990) includes A LOT of fairy tales characters on one single illustration:
Puss in Boots
Hansel & Grethel
Cinderella
Snow White
The Twelve Swans
The Three Piglets
The Ugly Duckling
The Red Shoes
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Petter Rabbit
The Chinese Nightingale (Thanks, Heleen! Again)
Sleeping Beauty (Thanks, Donna!)
The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs (Thanks, Phillip!)
The Golden Bird (Thanks, Eva!)
Dick Whittington and His Cat (Thanks, Anne!)
Saint George (Thanks, Anne!)
...
Are other characters on the postcard that I have missed?
The Chinese Nightingale?
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting, funny to see Dutch Post's canceling machine only hit three of the stamps and kept Fiep's/Annie's bus almost completely un-inked :-)
I wanted to post just for you to see the odd cancellations :)
DeleteIt's such a pleasure to visit you Eva. Takes me back to the days of the post office:) When the hurly-burly of this challenge is done, I shall grab a cuppa and enjoy your space at leisure:)
ReplyDeleteL is for Laundry
Thanks for your kind words! You're always welcome here :D
Deletecute- I wish people still sent me cards! :P
ReplyDeletetoo late smart
You can join Postcrossing, for instance. But I should warn you... it is highly addictive!
DeleteI LOVE fairy tales! So much creative fodder there. They are such classics with their hidden messages about being human. I joined Postcrossing & have dabbled a bit. Fun post today. Lettering Arts Fits right in with mail art.
ReplyDeleteYou're going to enjoy Postcrossing, I'm sure!
DeleteThanks for the link :)
I love the variety of postcards you post. Amazing!

I'm trying to post different styles. Well... I get very different postcards!
DeleteThese are just fantastic, Eva. You must have quite a collection!
ReplyDeleteI think Sleeping Beauty is depicted with the knight on the horse by the castle.

Not a "organised" collection, anyway.
DeleteThanks for pointing out to Sleeping Beauty.
That stamp sheet is phenomenal. A little red bus for riding back to your 'hood.
ReplyDeleteThis sheet is a favourite, I adore Fiep Westendorp. It is a pity that I haven't any better picture/scan (the envelope arrived to Spain).
DeleteHey i love all the variety of postcards you post..Hansel & Gratel was one of my favourite fairy tail..
ReplyDeleteLaunching SIM Organics This April

Thanks! I used to like Hansel and Gretel, but I found it too sad, at the same time.
DeleteBeautiful! I love the last one especially, with the fairy tail animals. The goose caught my eye but my fave was the Three Bears.
ReplyDeleteThe Three Bears is so funny, I love it too.
DeleteThese are all so delightful!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the postcards.
DeleteYou do have fun stuff up, ma'am!
ReplyDeleteHaven't spotted any more fairy tales but I'll keep looking!
Let me know if you find something.
DeleteCould the goose be the goose that laid the golden egg? Or is it part of a different story?
ReplyDeleteIn our tradition, it was a hen, not a goose! :O
DeleteJust the card to send to children. Naturally I would have the stamps.
ReplyDeleteWell, they were sent to an adult...
DeleteEva, what a wonderful life you're living. I can only imagine the delight when something like this lands in your incoming mail. It would be impossible to keep a smile off your face, no?
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
Impossible :)
Delete(But you can't compare receiving mail to getting murdered every day with a different weapon, you know.)
Love the vintage postcards! Maui Jungalow
ReplyDeleteVintage? Maybe you're right...
DeleteWhat a wonderful card...an awsome stamp set and an amazing picture. The boy with the fox might be one, too...but I don't know it
ReplyDeleteI think it could be The Golden Bird. I added it, anyway. Merci!
DeleteAwesome Nederland stamp. I remember a time I was in Seoul, Korea and I wanted mail a letter back home and all of sudden the weight of the decision to travel abroad became so powerful. The Post person had no idea what I was saying and requesting.
ReplyDeletePosting stamps like this may motivate even ONE person to travel one day.
L is for L'Engle, did you like Wrinkle in Time?

@trincarl
This sheet of stamps is one of my favourite ever (Mmm... I think I had already written that). Anyway, yes, I agree: stamps incite you to travel!
DeleteI really like the fun of finding all the characters in that last postcard.
ReplyDeletePostcards can be full of fun!
DeleteThey're all wonderful, but that fairy tale postcard is a marvelous work of art!
ReplyDeleteImagine how many time sped the illustrator to make this!
DeleteEeee that little red riding hood is so cute! :D I love it! The Molly Brett postcard is wonderful too - it reminds me of the illustrations in books my Mom and I read together. :)
ReplyDeleteHere's my "L" post :) http://nataliewestgate.com/2017/04/liar-secret-diary-of-a-serial-killer
Very different styles,aren't they?
DeleteSuch lovely illustrations! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, I think so!
DeleteIs that Dick Whittington and his cat in the background in front of Cinderella's coach?
ReplyDeleteLove that sheet of stamps!
A-Z of Printmakers
And Saint George on the horse?
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard about Dick Whittington... Now I think you're right. Also with Saint George (although some people wouldn't accept his belonging to the fairy world...). Thanks for your visit and your suggestions!
