Том Сойер Фест

The Tom Sawyer Fest is a summer festival of restoration of the historical heritage by volunteers and sponsors. They focus their efforts particularly on the wooden houses in the city center. Most of the festival's objects are buildings represent no value in the eyes of local authorities, as they are not listed as historical or architectural monuments.

The festival was born in Samara in 2015, and its name honours the character in Mark Twain's novels, who was punished by painting a wooden fence.

Before
The postcard has a clever design: you have to paint the house! It features "Svirelin's House" (Moskovskaya St,. 28, in Pereslavl-Zalessky) named after priest Alexander Ivanovich Svirelin, caretaker of the Pereslavl Theological School, writer, local historian and historian. It has been transformed thanks to 250 adult volunteers (and a lot of children!) during twenty days.

After
See more pictures here or in the official website.

(The mail adventure here is that, believe it or not, the postcard arrived when I was re-reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer...!)

Sunday Stamps | A Is for Anneke & Aussem

Welcome to a new alphabet round in Sunday StampsFor this new A-Z round I am (again!) showing stamps dedicated to women, among those that I have received. Starting with A...

Mathilde Franziska Anneke (1817 – 1884) was a German writer, feminist, and radical democrat who participated in the Revolutions of 1848–1849. In 1849, she moved to the United States, where she campaigned to end slavery, agitated to enfranchise women, and ran a girls' school.

Cilly Aussem (1909 – 1963) was a German tennis player. She was the first German, male or female, to win the singles title at Wimbledon,  in 1931.

Both stamps were issued in 1998, and belong to the series Frauen der deutschen Geschichte (='Women in German history'), a definitive stamp series issued in the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin from 1986 to 1990, and in reunited Germany 1990 to 2003.

20 Years of Postcrossing (1)

I have not been a full 20 year postcrosser (only almost 17 years), and I confess I did not properly celebrate the day*. However, I am happy to see one of the most wonderful projects ever is still alive and growing in its 20th anniversary

As I was happy to get these postcards from Bryon! --Have you noticed the red postcard is also on the other one?!?

*No worries: everyday is a good day to send postcards!

Thursday Postcard Hunt | Slowly

On the back:
From an original postcard of Miss Blossom E. Stevens, who worked as a postwoman during the First World War at Ashmore Post Office in Dorset, where her uncle was the Postmaster. The photograph was handed down to his great-niece, by whose permission is it reproduced.

And not so slowly, but still...
Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway. The steam train was an original mode of transportation up Pikes Peak, by pushing a passenger car up and then pulling it down. There are 4 stops along the trip where they would get water. The steam train went out of service in 1958, but one is still in working condition today and makes an occasional trip each year.
