The Garden Court, 1885-90 (The Briar Rose, based on the story of Sleeping Beauty) |
The Wine of Circe, 1863-9 (Circe pouring poison into a vase and awaiting the arrival of Ulysses) |
The Baleful Head, c. 1876 (Perseus showing Andromeda the head of the Gorgon Medusa) |
Three postcards featuring paintings by Edward Burne-Jones, sent by Laura (the UK).
These days Circe makes me think of Game of Thrones rather than classical mythology. A fun trio of postcards.
ReplyDeleteShe always made me think of The Odyssey. I'm a bit more old-fashioned... :D
DeleteIn my teens I've read the Greek and Roman legends/mythology more than once (including the Odyssey), but I had forgotten about Circe.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the Game of Thrones, so, similar to Eva, I think of the Odyssey's times... Although the paintings are different from the images I had in mind when reading the books.
Burne-Jones always brings me back to more recent times :-) His style is beautiful, by the way.
Thanks, Heleen. I was starting to think that I am the only person who is not watching Game of Thrones! (Although I saw some chapters, especially those filmed where I live.)
DeleteSo you have seen more Game of Thrones than I did :-)
DeleteAnd wow, I guess it must be so special to see well-known places in such a worldspread-watched movie!
