Today's theme for Sunday Stamps - II is Words and/or Numbers (no pictures). I was waiting it for show this stamp!:
It was issued by Correos on January 3, 2014, on the occasion of the 3rd Centenary of the Real Academia Española (='Royal Spanish Academy'), the official institution responsible for overseeing the Spanish language. I know the rule was no pictures, and you can see three dictionaries on the stamp. But, if you look carefully at the stamp, you can see they are used to mean the "III". And there is a dictionary definition on the background (lengua = 'language').
Not that I am very fond of this institution. But, in an ideal world, they should be more stamps dedicated to dictionaries...
And what about numbers? There are not so many stamps depicting just numbers, apart from basic series like these (from the Netherlands):
And still some people think that they look better with some illustrations (cows, for instance) in between...
And finally, two more stamps with illustrations... dedicated to numbers. From Hungary and the Netherlands.

Among my received stamps I also found the following one also from the Netherlands. Curiously, its title is Writing Letters.
And finally, two more stamps with illustrations... dedicated to numbers. From Hungary and the Netherlands.
The Spanish stamp has a great design! And your explanation of how the image turns out to be a Roman nhmber 3 caused a big smile on my face, so clever found! I love that stamp!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting the simple Dutch ones, I totally had forgotten / didn't realize they exist / belong in today's theme, too!
I like these little stamps with numbers. In Spain, these basic series of 1, 2, 5 centimes are always with the king's face, like these: http://mailadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/orange-kings-and-others.html
DeleteA good selection. I always found it fascinating that there is no equivalent to the Spanish (and french) institutions that oversee language for English.
ReplyDeleteWe also have these official institutions for Catalan language. And more active than the Spanish Academy! :D
Delete:D
Delete300 years is a long time to oversee a language, nice stamp. Those little cows grazing amongst the stamp fields are so funny.
ReplyDeleteThey made me smile :)
DeleteWith all the foreign words that have been absorbed into English, an institution for the preservation of English would be a joke!
ReplyDeleteThe 1999 80cent stamp is interesting looking - I wonder how they came up with that '8' typeface?
I don't think that English is accepting more foreign words than any other language. You need to create the institution right now, so you could issue a stamp in 2315... ;)

Oh, I love the Spanish stamp!
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect for students of Spanish language, isn't it? ;)
DeleteI found it difficult to find interesting number stamps so I love the Spanish stamp and the one from the Netherlands including the cows.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, Bob.
