To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the country, Canada Post issued a very special set of leaf-shaped stamps, dedicated to 10 unforgettable moments and achievements from the last 50 years.
One of the stamps commemorate the creation of the territory of Nunavut on 1 April 1999, after a decades-long struggle of the Inuit people (The whole story here). The stamp features the image of Leah Ejangiaq Kines, photographed by her husband Clare Kines, both of Arctic Bay.
(Update: I have just realised that I had already uploaded these stamps to the blog, along from others from the same set!)
---------------
For the new edition of Sunday Stamps-II A to Z, I have decided to show some of the stamps I have got on letters and postcards, related to one topic: women. This is the post for the letter N.
More women on stamps.
wow, that is a great design of stamps! I do have a soft spot for these parts of the world (related to the Arctic/Antarctica and well just anything nearby).
ReplyDeleteThe story is really heart-warming too. I wish we were able here too to say enough is enough and once and for all solve the silly dispute we have been dealing with for decades now.
Me too, I find this design wonderful, and also the stories behind.
DeleteActually, now I've realised that is the second time that I have featured them on the blog, ops!
I love this maple leaf serie and this one is one of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteHow I wish that other native people could say so and could be honoured on a stamp - alas the leader(s) of Canada's neighbouring country and the multinational companies show unfairness only, by decreasing the land of the people who were there first and destructing nature (the Dakota pipeline and many more proofs of injustice..)
Also one of my favourite too. And so true what you wrote... :(
DeleteGreat to see this stamp again. It is so striking in isolation.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sending them! :D
DeleteA happy outcome for the Inuit and a fascinating area of the world, perfect for the photographer I think.
ReplyDeleteThe picture couldn't be more beautiful!
DeleteNo way can any country copy this design.
ReplyDeleteThey have the maple leaf!
DeleteThese are special, I'm in love!
ReplyDelete:D
DeleteNice choice (even if for a second time!)
ReplyDeleteThe stamps, unfortunately, don't show up as well on a white background (my one complaint about them)
True, they look better on colour envelopes.
