La Lanterna di Genova

The Lanterna di Genova is the main light serving the Port of Genoa. Rebuilt in its current shape in 1543 replacing the former lighthouse, it is the world's fourth oldest lighthouse.

Between 1543 and 1902, it was the tallest lighthouse in the world. It is now the world's fifth tallest lighthouse, the second tallest lighthouse built in traditional masonry after Île Vierge and the tallest lighthouse of the Mediterranean Sea. When measured as a whole with the natural rock on which it stands, as it is commonly perceived and represented, its total height is 112 m, which makes it the second tallest lighthouse in the world, the tallest in Europe, and the tallest in the world when only traditional lighthouses are considered.

This postcard was sent by Stefano (Italy), with a matching stamp on the back.

Last year, I received an illustration of the same lighthouse sent by Ania, whre the rock is better appreciated: (but not the light!):

20 Years of Postcrossing (4)

This postcard is a commemorative re-edition of PT-1, the very first postcard sent trough Postcrossing in 2005. It celebrates 20 years of postcard exchanges, friendships, and connections across the globe --a small tribute to the journey that started with a single card, and grew into a worldwide community.

And eventually Heleen (the Netherlands) sent it. Now I have two versions!

Bishop's Rock Real Photograph

The Bishop Rock Lighthouse is located in the westernmost part of the Isles of Scilly. The Guinness Book of Records lists it as the world's smallest island with a building on it.

The original iron lighthouse was begun in 1847 but was washed away before it could be completed. The present building was completed in 1858 and was first lit on 1 September that year. Before the installation of the helipad, visitors to the lighthouse would rappel from the base (with winches installed at the lamp level and at the base) to boats waiting away from the lighthouse.

On the back of these black and white postcards you can read: "Guaranteed real photograph".

Postcards sent by Alan and John (the UK).
