Women on Postcards | B Is for Beira Alta

We do not know who this woman is, but on the back of the postcard it is written "Beira Alta". Beira Alta (Upper Beira) was a Portuguese province in the north of Portugal.

The picture was taken in 1998. The photographer was Helena Henriques, and the postcard was sent by Pedro (Portugal).

  1. Glad to have helped with your Women on postcard project.
This Lady, all dressed in black, is so paradigmatic of all the black clad women that I remember from my childhood in the hinterland of my country.
We still see them in vilages in the interior, but thankfully less and less, these days.
Once they widowed, they would forever dress in black and never marry again...
Sad ladies in what was them a terribly sad country..

    2. Yes, I know. We share a lot with the other side of the border. In fact, in some places the border divided families, relatives...
Poverty and ignorance were also sadly shared...
We have come a loooong way in 50 years on both sides of the border....
