Thursday Postcard Hunt | O Polbo

Postcard sent by Pedro (Spain), during a recent trip to A Coruña

O Polbo (='The Octopus')  is a work by Javier M. Padín Martínez. It was inaugurated along with other sculptures on the A Coruña seafront in 2004. This statue is made of reinforced concrete and covered with small, colorful ceramic pieces that change hue depending on the sunlight. It measures 2 meters high by 3 meters wide.

On the background you can see the most famous landmark of this city: the Tower of Hercules,  the oldest known extant Roman lighthouse. It also appears on the pictorial postmark:

  1. Is this octopus made of mosaic?

  2. Very photogenic, I'd like to see those pieces of mosaic shine on a sunny day like that. I like the link between the Roman world and their mosaic octopus on floor tiles and of course you have the luck of a remaining lighthouse.

    2. Indeed. it really is a beautiful piece and quite well placed. Furthermore it is a "functional" sculpture, since it is a bench, so I can imagine that on any given sunny summer day it might get quite popular with the "shoot me in two dozen poses" crowd,:-)

    3. Oh, and I forgot: There was Paella, (or should I say, Arroz à Valenciana), a very large one, in my letterbox today. Thanks (Maybe I will try the recipe... ;-)

      Mail went out today too.

  3. The octopus on the postcard is a gorgeous sculpture. I love that the tiles change colors, and they installed it across the railing. I also like the cow stamp.
