It's certainly curious. The bird stamps arrive generally safe and sound, but these poor flag stamps are not respected by the postal machines. Can it be because of the type of paper.
I often receive postcards with marks on the front in about that position. My theory is that the paper used on the vintage stamps is not quite strong enough for the rigors of modern sorting machines
Amazing the bird stamps are not abused like the flag stamps are!
