You chose some wonderful stamps - my favorite is the one from Taiwan, and the Brazilian one is intriguing - does it depict a legend or myth of some sort?
I too like the Brazilian stamp. If I'm not mistaken, the legend is that a deity took an eye from a mourned dead child and planted it, from there the plant guarana grew to look like eyes.
Thanks to Marina I don't have to wonder about that Brazilian stamp! It's just too, too strange! I focus was not on the snake, but those eyes! Still need to find out about that masked person in the background.
Thanks for the link - the accompanying stamp with the tree growing out of the child's body is quite something. It makes me think of the scifi novel, Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card, set on a planet where Portuguese is the main language.
Indeed snakes are onomatepeic animals! Btw the Dutch year of the Snake stamp is on its way to you! (Alas PostNL does not issue beautiful colourful designs which the zodiac stamps deserve..)

ReplyDeleteAnd happy Groundhog Day!
DeleteSomeone explained the legend on the comments. But just look at this picture of the ripe guaraná fruits!
DeleteOh, Groundhog Day is going well... same as usual :)
Very disturbing! And :)
DeleteI like all those eyes on the Brazilian stamp and a suitably slithery 'S' for the garter snakes.

ReplyDeleteI think it was a snake who killed the child, hence the snake on the stamp.

ReplyDeleteI don't know abut the masked people. I found online that she is the mother of the child.

DeleteTaiwan generally has some pretty playful stamps for lunar new year, but I like the two garters.
ReplyDeleteThey are very different stamps, indeed.
