Thursday Postcard Hunt | Ham House

Bacchus among the domed lavender and topiary cones of the
Cherry Garden

Originally built in 1610, Ham House is a rare and atmospheric survival of 17th century architecture, art and furniture. In 1626, it was given by King Charles I to William and Catherine Murray. During the English Civil Wars, Catherine and their elder daughter, Elizabeth, managed to keep Ham safe with the support of Elizabeth's first husband Sir Lionel Tollemache. After the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 Elizabeth and her second husband, the Duke of Lauderdale, extended the house and collected spectacular art and furniture. The house remained in the Tollemache family until 1948, when it was given to the National Trust.

Franklin Park Conservatory

The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardeny is located in Columbus (Ohio, USA). On the postcard above, you can see the John F. Wolfe Palm House, built in 1895, as illuminated by James Turrell 's 2008 installation Light Raiment II.

Inside, you can enjoy wonderful creatures like these:

I don't know if you can see the following species at the conservatory, but I think they are pretty matching stamps. The flowers belong to the Mountain Flora series, issued in March 2022.

HitM | Carlyle's House

Another special house for the Houses in the Mail project: Carlyle's House, in Chelsea (London, the UK). 

The house was open to public as a tourist attraction in 1895, and has been open since.

Stunning Buildings on Postcards

Postcards of the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre of Beauvais sent by Fabienne (France). The big postcard shows the south façade. The normal-size postcards feature the astronomical clock (14th century) inside the cathedral, and the artists that made it.
