Women on Stamps | Gender Inequality

This stamp was issued by the Spanish postal service on 25 May 2017, and it is dedicated to the Spanish actress known as Lina Morgan (1937-2015).

Actually, I don't have it. But I wanted to show it because this is the stamp of 2017.

I don't know if Correos broke a kind of record last year. They issued 92 individual stamps. Among them, 17 were dedicated to famous men, famous men's achievements o male characters. And then you have 1 stamp dedicated to a woman.

Besides Lina Morgan, no more women appear on 2017 Spanish stamps, except for Virgin Mary and two literary characters (on stamps dedicated to male's works). On the contrary, you can recognise the men that appear on 24 stamps, including some foreigners. 25, if you count Darth Vader.

For the new edition of Sunday Stamps-II A to Z, I have decided to show some of the stamps I have got on letters and postcards, related to one topic: women. This is the post for the letter G.

More women on stamps.

  1. I looked at the wiki page - which doesn't have much on her (for shame!) - and she seems to have achieved some high honours.

    1. She isn't very recognised internationally, as usually happens with TV stars. But her shows were funny (for that time, of course!).

  3. Your title could be Gender Inequality.

  4. Wow only one lone woman for a whole year. Makes one think of other stamp issuing policies. The anniversary of female suffrage has managed to bump up our numbers up in just one issue.

    1. I'm not always agree with my country policy of issues, you know...

  5. I know that in general women tend to be represented less in many spheres, stamps as well... but this is indeed a big discrepancy. Though when I think of the Macedonian stamps, we are not lagging behind. In fact, some years go without a single woman represented.

    1. That's sad. But we are not doing any better, in Spain!

  6. That is a too big and bad injustice..

I am not sure how Netherlands does, concerning gender equality. If I remember well, even not many stamps are dedicated to people, most are about things, buildings, nature.. And two 'Pride' stamps in 2016, one showing a female, the other a male silhouette.
