Alphabet 2023 | U is for United Nations

The U postcard of the Alphabet 2023 came from the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as you see on the colourful stamps. 

The postal services did not spare postmarks: 27 September, 2 October, 3 October... (?). In any case, it took more than five weeks to arrive.

Is Autumn Here?

Postcard of a chestnut sent by Heleen (the Netherlands).

Stamp issued by India Post on 15 August 2017, featuring one of the winners of the Beautiful India Nationwide Photography Competition. I do not know when the picture was taken, but it seems Autumn to me.

This stamp belong to the series Animals in their habitats, issued by Swiss Post in March 2022. I like the description on the web:

The first depicts the brown-lipped snail, which carries its home around on its back and can be seen crawling at a leisurely pace over mossy terrain. It adorns the B Mail face value and is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to snail mail.

It was a present from Heleen and arrived inside this envelope.

(In)equality Stamps

Maybe you wonder about those Pantone-like stamps. I sent some more:

They belong to a campaign against racial discrimination. In May 2021, Correos launched Equality Stamps to reflect "an unjust reality that should not exist, in an effort to raise awareness of diversity, inclusion and equal rights". (See the video here).

The idea behind is that you must used more black stamps than "white" ones. But what the users read was: the darker the colour, the smaller the face value. The campaign received a lot of criticism, and the stamps were withdrawn from the market almost immediately.

Un cabinet de curiosités

Cabinets of curiosities were collections of notable objects. The term cabinet originally described a room rather than a piece of furniture. Modern terminology would categorise the objects included as belonging to natural history (sometimes faked), geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art (including cabinet paintings), and antiquities. The classic cabinet of curiosities emerged in the 16th century, although more rudimentary collections had existed earlier.
