International Moon Day

International Moon Day (IMD) is a United Nations-proclamed annual celebration held on July 20 to mark the anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon by Apollo 11 in 1969. IMD serves as a platform to educate, inspire, and promote awareness about the past, present, and future of sustainable lunar exploration and utilization.

Ansel Adams

Ansel Easton Adams (1902– 1984) was an American landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his black-and-white images of the American West. 

These stamps commemorating his impact in art were issued in 2024.

I think I have got all of them by now. They look wonderful on letters!

This stamp was issued by Correos on 11 March 2024 to commemorate (?) the 20th anniversary of a terrorist attack in Madrid. As you can read in Correos website:

[...] Twenty years later, it is important to remember and honour the victims, as well as reflect on the legacy of this tragic event. The collective memory of those dark days should serve as a reminder of the fragility of peace and the importance of solidarity and unity in times of crisis, something that should strengthen the social fabric that unites us as a society. [...]

It seems to me, however, an odd and sad issue.

Doors of the World

As many of you probably know, I like postcards with doors. And they are very apt to send New Year wishes, like the one above sent by Fabienne (France).

I have probably seen it in person, because the picture, it says, was taken in the city of Chefchaouen (Morocco), which I used to live not far from.

Many years ago, Heleen (the Netherlands) sent me another from this series: an Irish door.

Maybe I should sent pictures of my door to the world, too.

Year of the Sow

This postcard from Byron (Canada) was written on 15th February, but the date on the postmark is 4th March, and it arrived on 21 March. Well, actually it arrived on time for the New Year. Not the Chinese (18 February) but for the Persian or Nowruz, celebrated at the beginning of the spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

The postcard features a sow of Chato Murciano, a breed of domestic pig originating from Spain. As it reads on the back:

This delightful slate-grey pig has a very old Spanish ancestry, hailing from south-eastern Murcia. In 1865 there were 50,000 of them and more more than twice as many in 1929. It is a thrifty, hardy and easily managed, doing well on farm by-products and waste food. 

So, in a way, it was coming home. Unluckily, this breed is endangered nowadays.

I need to add the postcard to this post!

In my language, we use the same word for 'trunk' and 'horn': trompa. And, strange it might seem, that was the matter of the letter inside...

Women on Stamps | C for Casgrain

Thérèse Casgrain (1896-1981) was a French Canadian feminist, reformer, politician and senator. She led the women's suffrage movement in Quebec and campaigned for women's rights and for the right to vote in Quebec elections, a right that was not won until 1940. She was also the first woman to lead a provincial political party in Canada.

This stamp was issued on 17 April 1985.

HitM | Old House

Another contribution to the Houses in the Mail project, sent by Phillip (the USA). He made this envelope more than 25 years ago (!!) and, obviously, it is impossible to remember where this house is placed.

I like how the stamps integrate on the design. By the way, this guy is appearing a lot on my mail, lately!
