In the Netherlands, Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) is celebrated each year on May the 5th to mark the end of the occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II.

  1. Thank you for posting! Today it is the 75th year of commemorating our liberation - and since recent years 5th of May, besides recovering of freedom (bevrijding = liberation), also means being grateful for living in freedom and peace (including democracy, freedom of speech etc).

As all other celebration days all-over the world, this year's 5th of May is celebrated in a weird way: staying home (which for me is not unusual on this kind of 'free days'/off from work days). It is sad that many people will miss the veterans' parades now (this 75th year might have been one of the last opportunities for the - now very old - veterans from Canada, UK, US to visit NL and be rewarded and honoured by thankful people), and many people will miss the 'Bevrijdingsfestivals' (today's music festivals all-over the country, which has become a tradition on 5 May, have been cancelled of course, too).
But in our hearts and mind (and while watching the traditions - like 'forwarding the flame', last midnight - on tv) we of course keep on being thankful for the fact that we're living in freedom and peace.

  2. A wonderful day to celebrate, even if this year it is more indoors than normal.

    3. In Britain our Mayday holiday has been moved to Friday to mark VE day. So we too have yet another day off work and at home — we are invited to sing on the doorstep.
