Women on Stamps | Edith Piaf

Does Édith Piaf (1915-1963) need an introduction? She was a French singer, songwriter, and actress who became widely regarded as France's national chanteuse, as well as being one of France's greatest international stars.

Several countries have issued stamps honouring her. I have received these two, that are among my favourite designs ever. The USPS stamp above was issued on 12 June 2012; it was a joint issue with France (including another stamp of Miles Davies).

The stamp below was issued by the Magyar Posta in 2012 to mark the centenary of her birth (More information here).

---------------

For the new edition of Sunday Stamps-II A to Z, I have decided to show some of the stamps I have got on letters and postcards, related to one topic: women. This is the post for the letter P.

More women on stamps.

  1. It is a most unusual portrait on the US stamp, they always come up with something different. What a troubled life she led but I suppose it made her the artist she was.

    1. I also think it isn't an usual picture to put on a stamp, but it is extremely powerful.

  3. Before the USPS issued the stamp, I was not familiar with Edith Piaf and because of the stamp I looked her up and listened to several of her fine tunes.

    1. Stamps are always useful in order to educate ourselves :)

  4. I think this issue of two stamps is very striking, and unusually dark for US issues.

  5. Kinda happy that this is someone I have heard of before (and even listened to some of her stuff) :))

Btw, whenever I hear of Edit Piaf, I can't help myself but think of the "Le Piaf" cartoon - one I never figured out and wondered how on Earth they showed it (at least here) during the prime time for children - it is about a bird always angry about something :)

  6. I spent some time stationed near Paris when in the army. Piaf's singing was well known to us. Good to see her on a stamp.

    1. More than one, actually! I think she is more than a singer.

  7. What a unique voice...amazing singer, and what a life she had...I think Marion Cotillard did a fantastic job portraying her in 'La Vie En Rose' (the title is also my favourite song of hers)

    1. One of mine, too. I guess it is one of the most famous, along with "Je ne regret rien".
